Nevada’s base sales tax rate is 6.850%, but combined rates can rise as high as 8.375% once county and district taxes are factored in. With a substantial percentage of Nevada’s population concentrated in Clark and Washoe Counties, those higher rates are unavoidable for many businesses that sell there. Below, we’ll explore how the Nevada sales tax rate structure works, where local rates apply, and how to calculate the right combined rate for every transaction your business makes.

Highlights

  • Nevada has a 6.850% base sales tax rate, but more populated areas have combined rates of over 8.000% once county taxes are added.

  • Nevada uses destination-based sourcing for sales so remote sellers apply the tax rate based on the buyer’s location.

  • Remote sellers must collect and remit sales tax once they exceed Nevada’s economic nexus threshold.

What is the Nevada sales tax rate?

Nevada’s base sales tax rate is 6.850%. But the combined rate buyers encounter can rise up to 8.375%, depending on where the transaction occurs. If you’re selling into Nevada, you need to know what local sales tax rates apply to your customers based on their locations.

How does Nevada’s sales tax rate work?

Nevada’s sales tax is a stack that starts with the 6.850% state rate. Counties can then add their own taxes on top, and some add district taxes for specific purposes (e.g., transportation, flood control, infrastructure).

Nevada taxes tangible personal property by default, although items such as prescription drugs and unprepared food are exempt. Many services are also exempt, including software-as-a-service (SaaS). Nevada’s treatment of electronic services depends on how the product is characterized. So if you’re selling software subscriptions into the state, it’s worth confirming your specific product’s taxability with the Nevada Department of Taxation.

Nexus determines whether you have to collect and remit sales tax in Nevada. You can establish either physical nexus (i.e., an office, a warehouse, or employees in the state) or economic nexus (i.e., more than $100,000 in Nevada sales or 200 separate transactions in the state in a calendar year). Out-of-state sellers that have economic nexus must register, collect, and remit sales tax.

What are Nevada’s sales tax rates by city?

Nevada’s sales tax rate varies by city based on the county it’s in and any additional district taxes that apply. A large percentage of Nevada’s population lives in Clark County (Las Vegas in particular) and Washoe County (Reno in particular). Both counties have combined rates well above the state minimum. If you’re selling in Nevada, you’re likely working with rates of over 8.000% on the majority of your transactions.

Here are the minimum combined rates for some of Nevada’s largest cities.

How do you calculate sales tax in Nevada?

To calculate sales tax, you need to multiply the taxable sale amount by the combined rate.

The harder part is knowing which combined tax rate applies. Nevada uses destination-based sourcing for sales. That means in-person transactions use the sales tax rate for your business location, but remote transactions—whether you’re shipping physical goods or delivering digital products into Nevada—use the tax rate at the buyer’s location.

There are also certain sales that are exempt from sales tax. Sales to resellers with valid Nevada resale certificates aren’t taxable, for example. Some transactions are a mix of exempt and nonexempt items and services, and you’ll need to ensure you’re applying sales tax only to the taxable ones. If you’re selling software, subscriptions, or digital downloads into Nevada, confirm your product category’s taxability.

Rate changes are another variable. If you don’t update your sales tax calculations, you could end up undercharging—and needing to cover the difference when you remit—or overcharging, which creates compliance issues.

Stripe’s sales tax calculator can give you the combined rate for a specific transaction or location without requiring you to cross-reference county tables manually.
